History

The idea of the museum was born in 1866 when a group of Americans that were in Paris at the time decided to create a “national institute and gallery of art.” Their goal was to bring education in the arts to America. Many people were brought onto the board to form The Metropolitan Museum of Art, which was officially opened to the public on April 13, 1870. By the 20th century, The Met had become an art center of the world and has continued to grow to this day. Today, there are tens of thousands of pieces displayed at once throughout the two-million-square-foot building.
